I was commisioned by the Centre for Education and Teaching Innovation (CETI) to develop an e-learning resource that drew on the key lessons from out national scoping study: Taking Stock of Service Learning.
The final resource utilises the concept of an in-person conference to bring to life the perspectives of university staff and community leaders who have experience of setting up and delivering community-engaged learning modules. Through a series of candid interviews, key lessons and insights are shared across six key themes:
• Motivations for undertaking Community Engaged Learning
• Working in partnership
• Navigating challenges
• Learning outcomes and assessment
• Setting up activities and facilitating outputs
• Evaluation
Each section contains a series of 'mini-conversations' covering a wide range of themes, designed to prompt the user to reflect on their practices and experiences.
Topics such as 'making risk a place for learning', 'realism and managing expectations', bring the learning content to life, and are further complemented by downloadable PDFs with reading and guidance.
You can access the full tool-kit via the CETI website here. Users will need to create a log-in.
The video below show's the full interview of two of the contributers: Alan Chandler (Department of Architecture and Visual Arts, UEL) and Nick Newman, (Director of Studio Bark).
The toolkit was developed in partnership with e-learning developer Chris Peach and is licensed under Creative Commons.
